I now have two Hot Shot kilns in my class room and I am super happy with them.
1) They have a double layer of steel around the firebricks with a cooling system fan which makes the kiln cool to the touch on the outside. The most obvious benefits to this are safety and during hot summer months they don't heat up the studio to sweat shop temperature!
2) They are firebricks with an exposed element. The two advantages to this are that if your element goes out it is fairly inexpensive to fix. I think about $75. If a muffle type element goes out (Paragon) it is $500 to replace. The second advantage is that there is no wild overswing in temperature as in the Paragon. I have been successfully flashing my silver in my Hot Shot hundreds of times now. The only disadvantage I can see is if a student happens to hit the element with the firing fork. I am certain that I won't hit it but never underestimate students...
3) The Tap and Go controller is super straight forward and you can change the temperature at any time even during firing. It is not programmable to ramp up slowly and hold for intervals so if you are doing metal clay in the same kiln, you would want the Spark Controller. For enameling only- no need to spend the extra money.
4) The Customer Support has proven to be reliable, responsive and knowledgeable.
5)The door closure is smooth with an air tight latch mechanism.
6) Shipping is straight from the manufacturer in Wisconsin so no extra delivery costs to have it shipped from Hot Shot to Enamel Art Supply and then to you.
7) No annoying clicking as the thermostat adjusts the temp.
I hope this is helpful!
